Goat & Sheep Producers of Alabama
Seminar, Anonymous Show, and Sale
Scheduled for April in Huntsville, Al.

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in our anonymous meat goat show and sale. The meat goat show and sale will be held on Saturday April 12, 2008, at the AAMU Agribition Center in Huntsville, Alabama in the afternoon.

There will be a seminar Saturday from 9:00 a.m to Noon on Marketing Strategies and Grading (both live and carcass). Dr. Frank Pinkerton, Retired goat specialist from Langston University, Oklahoma and Dr. McMillan, meat scientist, from LSU will be our special guests for this seminar. Everyone is invited !

Dr. Pinkerton will describe goat marketing channels (how your goats get from the farm to the final consumer) with special attention to who does what to whom at what price. He will also explain the 'case of the incredible shrinking goat' (how your 70 lb farm-weight slaughter goat turns into a 30 lb carcass for retail sale).

In addition, he will answer the gut question of: just who really decides what the optimum 'goat' looks like hanging on the rail, and thus also decides, indirectly, the optimum-looking live goat that produces this carcass? He will identify those 'live' and carcass characteristics that have economic value to the packer/consumer and those that do not. He will comment on the possible influence of breed of goat on carcass conformation.

The meat goat anonymous show will begin at 1:00 pm and the sale at 3:00 pm. The meat goats show will be judged by a certified AMGA's judge, Ms. Kay Garrett from Prague, Oklahoma and auction by an licensed auctioneer,            .The sale is open to straight bred and percentages stock. All the selling stock will meet conformation standards of the American Meat Goat Association (AMGA). ALL GOATS IN THE SHOW MUST ALSO BE IN THE AUCTION.

GSPA Board of Directors is committed to leading and promoting the goat industry in Alabama, by promoting: “High Quality” replacement animals, regardless of breed-type.
The purpose of this show and sale is to assist goat producers in buying high quality goats. This is also the opportunity to introduce potential producers to high quality breeding stock and what to look for in choosing foundation animals to a herd.

Participants in the sale include: Dr. Richard Browning, TSU Research Farm; Marty Yager, Cedar Hill Farm, Alabama; Tommy Burton, Childersburg, Alabama; etc.

Please have all animals at the Agribition Center no later than 8:00 P.M. on Friday April 11, 2008. A licensed veterinarian will be in the sale site to inspect all animals for visible signs of caseous lymphadenitis (CL) and other infectious and contagious diseases. The veterinarian will also check the animals’ health certificate. Please, remember that a health certificate is required to move animals in and from the state of Alabama. Therefore, all animals must meet the health certification requirement.

Saturday morning (April 12, 2008) a certified AMGA judge will inspect all meat goats to insure all animals meet the minimum standards established by AMGA.
Animals selected by the judge as to not meeting the standards will not be allowed in the show or sale.
The GSPA members will incur a fee of $5 per head plus a commission fee of 5 per cent per animal. Non-GSPA member consignments will be accepted for a fee of $5 per head plus a commission fee of 10 per cent per animal. A “No Sale” will incur a 5% commission of the highest bid.  The entry fee must be paid at the time you consign your goats.

Sellers will have the opportunity to market 10 goats. (nine females and one male). The seller is responsible for guaranteeing the health and soundness of their consignments. GSPA assumes no liability with regards to animal soundness. The GSPA Board has determined that registered breeders will have the opportunity to consign 10 goats with a maximum of one (1) male only.

If you are interested in participating in this show and sale, please complete, sign, and return the enclosed enrollment form no later than February 28, 2008. GSPA will publish a catalog of all animals consigned to the sale. Therefore, please include copies of the pedigree information and picture (if desired) with your enrollment form.
At the day of sale, bring a copy of the health certificate of the animals and the original
certificate of your consignments.
The sale will be limited to 100 goats.

The GSPA Board thanks you for your participation.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M University offers a series of free gastro-intestinal parasite identification and FAMACHA training workshops. The Goat and Sheep Producers of Alabama (GSPA) co-sponsor the workshops. The workshops are conducted at the beginning of the grazing season, early spring, because the spring season is the time when gastrointestinal parasite infections are more prevalent. The objective of these workshops is to educate extension agents, farmers, veterinarian practitioners and others interested individuals on small ruminant production, gastro-intestinal parasites (worms) life-cycle, the consequences of parasite-host interactions, and the mode of action of dewormers. The workshops inform producers about the risks and nature of gastrointestinal parasite infections in an effort to reduce the likelihood of infections. In addition, presentations on FDA-approved and non FDA-approved products are delivered, and most importantly, training is provided to producers to minimize the use of chemicals in the control of G.I. parasites.
Producers learn alternative methods of herd management to help minimize G.I. parasite infections in their herds. In addition, FAMACHA training is provided at the workshops. The FAMACHA test is a test developed by South African scientists and is a management tool used to control barber pole worm infection of sheep and goats.
